What Is Your Church Built On? A Reminder About Foundations That Actually Matter
In a world that seems to change by the minute, it is easy to lose sight of what actually holds us together. This is a reminder about foundations: what we are built on, why it matters, and what quietly threatens to replace the bedrock beneath our feet.

Why Church Foundations Matter More Than Ever
Seasons change. Kids grow up. Work shifts. Marriages evolve. And in the middle of all of that movement, it is worth asking: what stays the same?

Jesus addressed this directly in Matthew 7:24-27:

"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken Him to a wise man who built His house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall." - Matthew 7:24-27

Storms come for everyone. The question is never whether the storm will arrive. The question is what you are standing on when it does.

What Are the Five Foundations of a Bible-Based Church?
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:9-11 that Jesus Christ is the cornerstone, and we are called to build carefully upon that foundation. With that in mind, here are five foundational principles worth returning to again and again:

Everything is for one name only. The name of Jesus is lifted high, not the name of a pastor, a church, or a denomination.
It all starts with the family. A healthy family makes for a healthy church, and a healthy church breeds a healthy community.
Authentic love for everyone. Because Christ loved us when we were unworthy, we are called to extend that same love to others.
You will be challenged to change. Scripture is transformational, and that means the people who engage with it are going to be pushed to grow.
Changed people change people. The Great Commission is not optional. When God transforms a life, that life cannot help but share the message.
Why These Principles Feel Countercultural Right Now
These five foundations are not popular in today's culture. Lifting up the name of Jesus alone is considered exclusive. Valuing the family unit is increasingly dismissed. Showing love to everyone cuts against tribalism. Being challenged to change feels like judgment to many. And sharing your faith? That is practically offensive in some circles.

But Romans 12:2 is clear: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." - Romans 12:2

And 1 John 2 reminds us that this world is passing away, but whoever does the will of God remains forever. Being countercultural is not a flaw. It is the point.

What Is Quietly Replacing the Bible as Your Foundation?
Here is where things get honest. One of the greatest threats to a solid foundation today is not a dramatic crisis. It is something most of us do for hours every single day without thinking about it.

The average American spends six hours a day on the internet. Three of those hours are on social media. And social media is not a neutral tool. It is an echo chamber.

How Does the Social Media Echo Chamber Work?
Every time you like a post, comment on a video, or tell the algorithm to stop showing you something, you are training your feed to reflect your existing beliefs back to you. It agrees with you. Always. That is how it is designed.

So how you feel about marriage, parenting, giving, serving, spiritual leaders, and even the church itself is likely being shaped, at least in part, by what your feed is telling you to think. And because everyone in your feed seems to agree with you, it feels like truth.

Psalm 11:2-3 puts it this way: "For look! The wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow on the string, that they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" - Psalm 11:2-3

The arrows come secretly. You do not always feel them landing. You are just scrolling, and slowly, quietly, your foundation is being shaped by something other than the Word of God.

What Did People Used to Do Instead?
There was a time when people sat at the kitchen table with an open Bible and a concordance, searching the Word to establish what they believed. Core convictions were built on Scripture, not on what an algorithm decided to show them that morning.

That practice has not become impossible. It has just been crowded out.

What Happens When the Foundation Shifts?
The Leaning Tower of Pisa began construction in 1178. By the time workers reached the third floor, it was already sinking. Builders had laid only a three-meter foundation into weak, unstable clay. It has taken centuries of engineering, millions of dollars, and massive stabilization efforts just to keep it standing.

A weak foundation does not always collapse immediately. Sometimes it just leans, slowly and quietly, until the damage becomes impossible to ignore.

The same is true in a life, a marriage, a family, or a church. When the Word of God is pushed aside and something else fills that space, the drift is gradual. But it is real.

This Is Not About Being Anti-Social Media
This is not a call to delete every app and throw your phone in a lake. Social media can be a powerful tool for connection and even for kingdom work. The concern is not the tool itself. It is what happens when the tool becomes the teacher.

The issue is when your Bible collects dust while your feed gets three hours of daily attention. The issue is when the echo chamber of your own preferences becomes the voice that shapes what you believe about God, family, love, and truth.

Colossians 2:8 warns: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." - Colossians 2:8

What Can You Do About It?
Start small. Set a time limit on social media. Pick up the Word of God with the time you reclaim. Join a small group. Serve somewhere. Read a book. Invest that scrolling time into something that actually builds your foundation rather than just reflecting it back to you.

The goal is not perfection. It is direction. It is choosing, intentionally, what gets to speak into the deepest parts of who you are.

Life Application
This week, take one concrete step to protect your foundation. Set a daily time limit on your social media apps and replace even fifteen minutes of scrolling with time in Scripture. Let the Word of God be the voice that shapes what you believe, not the echo chamber of your own preferences.

Ask yourself these questions as you go into the week:

What is actually building my foundation right now: the Word of God or my social media feed?
Are my beliefs about marriage, family, love, and faith rooted in Scripture, or have they quietly drifted toward what my feed tells me to think?
What is one thing I can put down this week to make more room for what actually lasts?
Foundations are not built in a single moment. They are built day by day, choice by choice. The rain will come. The wind will blow. What you are standing on when it does is the only thing that will matter.
