What Does It Mean to Be Free in Christ? Understanding Christian Freedom
Freedom is one of the most powerful promises in the Christian faith. But what does it actually mean to be free in Christ? And why do so many believers still feel trapped by their past, their habits, or their identity? The Book of Galatians gives us a clear and compelling answer.
What Is the Book of Galatians About?
The Apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Galatians around AD 48 to a group of churches in the southern region of the Roman province of Galatia. False teachers had convinced these believers that they needed to follow the outward ceremonies of the Mosaic Law, including circumcision, in order to truly belong to God.
Paul pushed back hard. His central argument was simple: what the law of Moses could not do for us, the blood of Jesus Christ has done. Salvation is not earned through religious works. It comes through faith alone.
In this letter, Paul establishes what theologians call the doctrine of Christian freedom, the truth that Christ has both fulfilled the law in our place and suffered the curse in our place.
Two Covenants: Bondage vs. Freedom
In Galatians 4:21-31, Paul uses the story of Abraham's two sons to illustrate two very different ways of relating to God. One son was born of a slave woman and represents the old covenant of law and bondage. The other was born of a free woman and represents the new covenant of promise and freedom.
Paul's conclusion is direct:
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." - Galatians 5:1
You are not a child of bondage. You are a child of the promise.
What Has Christ Set Us Free From?
Christian freedom is not a vague spiritual concept. It is freedom from specific things that once held us captive:
The law that could never fully justify us
The bondage of sin and death
The guilt of our past
The power of the enemy over our lives
As Paul writes in Acts 13:39, "Everyone who believes is justified, freed from everything which the law of Moses could not free us from."
Only the gospel can do what religion, willpower, and self-improvement cannot.
Does Christian Freedom Mean You Can Do Whatever You Want?
This is one of the most common misunderstandings about grace. Being free in Christ does not mean you are free to live however you please.
"You, brethren, having been called to freedom, do not use this liberty as an opportunity for the flesh." - Galatians 5:13
Paul addresses this directly in Romans 6 as well:
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?" - Romans 6:1-2
Freedom in Christ means you are set free to live set apart for Him, not set free to return to the very things that once enslaved you.
What Is Spiritual Stockholm Syndrome?
Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response where a captive begins to feel affection or loyalty toward their captor. It happens when someone has been held so long in a place of bondage that freedom feels foreign and captivity feels like home.
Many believers experience a spiritual version of this. God has set them free, but they keep going back. Back to the addiction. Back to the toxic relationship. Back to the pride, the anger, the shame. Not because they have to, but because it feels familiar.
Think about the children of Israel. God delivered them from Egypt with signs and wonders. And yet, when things got hard in the wilderness, they said they wanted to go back. Why? Because at least in Egypt they had fish to eat. At least it was familiar.
Some of us are doing the same thing. We are celebrating the very things Christ has set us free from.
Stop Misremembering Your Old Life
One of the most dangerous things we do is romanticize our past. We forget how destructive it actually was and only remember the parts that felt good.
Stop misremembering how great that relationship was that tore you down. Stop misremembering how fun that substance was that was destroying your life. Stop misremembering how comfortable that sin was that was costing you everything.
"If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." - John 8:36
The curse that was on your life is no longer there. The guilty verdict has been transferred to Christ's death. You are now not guilty. Walk in that truth.
What You Believe About Yourself Matters
Many people stay in bondage not because they lack freedom, but because they do not believe they have it. They have accepted a false identity built on what others have spoken over them. Words like worthless, broken, too far gone, or always going to be this way.
But Scripture tells a different story:
"For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." - Galatians 3:26-27
You are not who your past says you are. You are not who your failures say you are. You are who God says you are. A son or daughter of God, clothed in Christ, an heir according to the promise.
How Do You Actually Walk in Freedom?
The answer Paul gives is consistent throughout Galatians: walk in the Spirit.
"Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." - Galatians 5:16
You do not fight your way out of sin through sheer willpower. That is like struggling in quicksand. The harder you fight in your own strength, the deeper you sink. Freedom comes when you stop straining in your own effort and start being led by the Spirit of God.
The new covenant gives you something the old covenant never could: the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to guide you, empower you, and lead you out of bondage.
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." - 2 Corinthians 3:17
There Is No Condemnation for Those in Christ
If you are carrying shame today, hear this clearly:
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." - Romans 8:1-2
God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. He sent His own Son. He condemned sin in the flesh so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, those who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
You do not have to keep paying a debt that has already been paid.
Life Application
This week, identify one area of your life where you have been living with spiritual Stockholm syndrome. One place where you keep returning to captivity even though Christ has already set you free. It might be a habit, a thought pattern, a relationship, or an old identity you keep putting back on.
Make a deliberate choice this week to stop going back. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you out of that place and into the freedom that is already yours in Christ.
Ask yourself these questions:
What is one thing I keep returning to that Christ has already set me free from?
What false identity have I accepted that contradicts what God says about me in Scripture?
Am I trying to fight my way out of sin in my own strength, or am I walking in the Spirit and trusting God to lead me?
What would my life look like this week if I truly believed I was free in Christ?
